Ahmedabad, Gujarat: A heated debate erupted in the Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday, with Congress MLA Imran Khedawala raising concerns over the functionality of CCTV cameras in Ahmedabad. Khedawala claimed that a staggering 70% of these cameras are non-operational, hindering police investigations and impacting public safety.
During Question Hour, Khedawala highlighted the issue while discussing e-memos issued for traffic violations. He argued that despite over 21 lakh e-memos being issued in 2022 and 2023, with fines exceeding Rs 29 crore, the lack of functional CCTV cameras hampers crime detection and accident analysis.
Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, countered this claim, stating that 1,705 CCTVs are currently operational in the city. He emphasized that citizens should not be misled into believing otherwise.
However, Khedawala contested this figure, suggesting the actual number of cameras to be around 6,000. Sanghavi refuted this claim, clarifying that there are two types of CCTV systems in the city: one installed under the Union government’s Mission Smart City project and the other under the state home department. He did not provide specific details on the breakdown of operational cameras within each system.
