In December last year, the police netted the big fish, Bobby Patel, the duplicitous seller of dreams, who sent four of a family from Gandhinagar on an illegal journey to the US that ended in their deaths.
Called Dingucha Kingpin, Bobby, the head of the thriving migrant racket, was released on bail. What followed was a lull in the investigative process. The Gujarat police have been strangely ineffective in cracking down on the bigger mafia and conducting a thorough inquiry,
The State Monitoring Cell (SMC) has searched for 18 illegal agents, including two from the United States of America. However, the cell is yet to provide a big lead. Even the maker of fake passports is absconding. An investigation is on to find more links, especially among employees of the passport office.
The Vibes of India understands that the SMC has also contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the CBI to trap USA-based Munno Makan and Charanjit Singh, key men in the nexus. Although the SMC has received some significant details, Makan and Singh are yet to be located.
Meanwhile, the SMC found many passports at both Patel’s office and residence. The officials identified four fake passports during the search. A case has been registered against four agents from Ahmedabad, four from Mehsana, three from Mumbai, five from Delhi and one from America for forging four fake passports.
Bobby misled more than 2000 people
According to the police, Bharat Patel, alias Bobby Patel, has helped more than 2000 people, including those from North Gujarat with fake passports, documents, and other illegal border crossings. The SMC is preparing a comprehensive list from Bobby’s database to conduct further inquiries.
