A leopard near the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary attacked an 80-year-old visually impaired woman in Gujarat’s Amreli district. According to the forest officials, the victim, Shantaben, was sleeping in her hut late on Tuesday.
After hearing her cries, the villagers from the outskirts of Jabal village in Savarkundla taluka rushed for her help. But it was too late as she succumbed to her injuries and died.
The leopard ran to the nearby forest after the villagers came.
After learning from the villagers about the incident, the forest officials hurried to the place. According to the officials, they set up two cages to catch the leopard.
“The woman lived alone in the hut. Her daughter was in another hut when the leopard attacked the victim, as the animal might have been hungry and searching for prey. The woman was partially blind. She died on the spot after the attack,” said the officials.
They said, “we have set up two cages to catch the leopard. We have also asked villagers to take extra care as the area is close to a forest.”
Earlier in May, a two-year-old infant girl was attacked in Vadodra by a leopard. Entering the infant’s family hut at night, the leopard took the girl in the mouth and started running towards the forest. The animal dropped her off after being chased, and the family took the girl to the hospital with injuries.
