Five workers died from suffocation due to a gas leak at Emami Agrotech, a company in Kandla, Kutch. The incident took place on Wednesday during a routine cleaning process of a waste liquid tank.
The victims, identified as Siddharth Tiwari, Ajmat Khan, Ashish Gupta, Ashish Kumar and Sanjay Thakor, included a supervisor, a tank operator and three helpers hailed from various states across India.
Sagar Bagmar, Superintendent of Police for Kutch (East), reported that the incident occurred around 1 am on Wednesday. He explained, “One employee was inspecting the tank to remove waste sludge from edible oil used in production. He fell unconscious and into the tank due to toxic gases emanating from it. Two other workers rushed to his aid but also lost consciousness. Two more individuals who attempted a rescue also fell victim to the noxious fumes. Tragically, all five employees died due to suffocation.”
Furthermore, the police official reported. “Although other workers immediately transported them to the government hospital, all five were declared dead upon arrival.” Their bodies have been transferred to Rambagh Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Kandla police and factory inspector are investigating the matter. An official case of accidental death has been registered at Kandla Police Station.
