Akash Deep, the 27-year-old pacer, made a sensational Test debut on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi. He rattled the English top order with his accurate bowling, picking up three wickets in the first session to leave the visitors reeling at 112/5.
Deep, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI, impressed everyone with his disciplined bowling. Despite missing a wicket due to a no-ball in his early overs, he bounced back to remove Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Zak Crawley in quick succession.
Former India captain Anil Kumble, part of the broadcaster’s match centre, lauded Deep’s performance and hailed the team management’s decision to select him. He said, “The team management got it spot on. They could have opted for Axar Patel considering the pitch, but Akash has bowled exceptionally well.”
Kumble praised Deep’s ability to bowl good lengths and exploit the conditions. “He doesn’t bowl that fast, but he bowls in good areas and gets the ball to nip back. This surface isn’t easy for strokeplay, and England batsmen were searching for something. But hats off to Akash,” he added.
Deep’s impressive debut has put India in a commanding position in the crucial fourth Test. With England struggling, the hosts are well on their way to clinching the series win.
