The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it was conducting the investigation into the rape and murder case of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata with the “utmost seriousness.”
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, presented the agency’s fifth status report to a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
“Investigation was going on in the matter with utmost seriousness. The chargesheet in the matter was filed on October 7 against accused Sanjay Roy and a Sealdah court has taken cognisance,” he told the bench.
The apex court noted that the CBI report suggested the agency was looking into other people’s involvement as part of its current inquiry and requested a status update in a matter of three weeks.
The top court pointed out that the National Task Force (NTF), which was established to provide recommendations on the security and safety of medical professionals, has not met since the first week of September.
Therefore, the Supreme Court instructed the Centre to take proactive measures to guarantee that the work was finished in a fair amount of time.
Within three weeks, the bench directed the NTF to develop suggestions about the safety of doctors in Kolkata. “The NTF should happen periodically and all sub-groups should hold regular meetings,” the bench stated.
