Two people, including a woman biker, have been shot dead by a police constable posted outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata Friday afternoon. The police constable reportedly fired multiple rounds before shooting himself dead.
The Bangladesh High Commission is situated in a lane off South Kokata’s Circus Avenue. The pocket is known to be a busy one.
“The whole incident lasted for around five minutes,” said by-stander Bablu Sheikh, who saw the shooting. He reported the horrific five minutes to the police.
The constable, Chodup Lepcha, had been on leave and joined duty today. The constable fired from his service weapon, a self-loading rifle or SLR. Senior police officers arrived at the spot soon after the incident.
“Chodup Lepcha joined the police around a year ago,” the Kolkata Police chief said. “A woman is seriously injured. Others have minor injuries.” The police said they will investigate if Chodup Lepcha had been suffering from depression.
