Bengali writer Sujan Dasgupta, the creator of the popular detective character Ekenbabu, was found dead at his residence in Kolkata on Wednesday, a family member said.
After there was no response when the maid turned up in the morning, the police had to break the door of his apartment in the Survey Park area. She alerted the neighbours, who called the police, the family member said. Dasgupta was found lying motionless on the floor near his bed, a police officer said. Dasgupta, 80, is survived by wife, daughter and two grandchildren.
He was later declared dead by a doctor. The writer’s wife is in Santiniketan on a trip, while his daughter stays abroad. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, the officer said.
