Kite String Kills Woman On Flyover In Surat

| Updated: January 12, 2024 17:43

A 22-year-old woman died after her throat was slit by a kite string while she was riding her moped on a flyover in Surat on Friday evening.

The victim, identified as Dikshita Thummar, was on her way home to MotaVarachha when the incident occurred on the slope of the Nana Varachha flyover around 6.15 pm. She was rushed to AAIMS hospital in Simada area, where she was declared brought dead by the doctors.

The Kapodra police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter. The police officer said that they could not find any thread on the body or at the place of incident. He added that Thummar was a college student and lived with her parents, brother and family members.

The incident has raised questions on the safety of people on the flyover, which has protection wires on both the sides. To prevent such incidents during the Uttarayan festival, the police commissioner has issued a notification banning two-wheelers on flyovers on January 14 and 15. However, people with safety guards on two-wheelers are allowed to go. The police have also advised the people to go under the flyover during the kite-flying days.

The Uttarayan festival, which marks the transition of the sun into the northern hemisphere, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Gujarat. People fly colourful kites and compete with each other to cut the strings of other kites. However, the use of sharp and metallic strings, known as manja, poses a serious threat to the lives of birds, animals and humans.
