Kiran Rao, the ex-wife of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has opened up about her bond with him and his first wife Reena Dutta. She said that they are still a family and have a natural sense of inclusiveness. She also shared a heartwarming anecdote about the wedding gift she received from Ira Khan, Aamir and Reena’s daughter.
Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan announced their divorce in 2021, after 15 years of marriage. However, they have maintained a strong and friendly relationship, as seen by Kiran’s active participation in Ira’s wedding with Nupur Shikhare. Kiran also said that she has a warm rapport with Reena Dutta, who was married to Aamir for 16 years before they divorced in 2002.
In an interview with The Week, Kiran recalled how Ira surprised her with an oil painting of a street in Berlin, her favourite city. She said that Ira is a brilliant painter like her mother Reena, and that the painting was the sweetest gift she could get. She said that they were all in tears when they saw the painting, which depicted the street where Cafe Cinema is located.
Kiran also spoke about how she, Aamir, Reena and their extended families get along well and have regular dinners together. She said that they live in the same housing society, and that she hangs out with Reena and Aamir’s cousin Nuzhat independently of Aamir. She said that they genuinely like each other as human beings, and that she adores her sisters-in-law who live upstairs. She said that these are relationships that one should not lose if they get divorced, and that she and Aamir did not have a bitter divorce. She said that they may have separated as a couple, but they are very much a family.
She also encouraged others to keep a familial bond at the end of a marriage, as it is something valuable that one might miss out on otherwise. She said that there are so many years that one would have invested in that relationship, and one should take away the best from it.
Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan got married in 2005, after working together on the film Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. They have a son, Azad Rao Khan, who was born through a surrogate mother in 2011. In 2021, they issued a joint statement announcing their divorce, but also their continued co-parenting and collaboration on joint projects. They said that they have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy and laughter in their 15 beautiful years together, and that their relationship has only grown in trust, respect and love. They said that they would like to begin a new chapter in their lives, no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.
