Finally, it will be a ghar wapsi of sorts for bluff-master Kiran Patel. The team of Gujarat Police in Jammu and Kashmir, to take custody of the conman accused in multiple cases of cheating, will arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Four First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged against Patel in different police stations across Gujarat, shared a city crime branch official. All cases relate to fraud and cheating.
Ahmedabad-resident Kiran Patel was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir last month for allegedly posing as a top official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). This was his second attempt at touring the Valley, lapping up VIP treatment, as a high-ranking official.
Patel’s wife, Malini, also an accused in the matter is currently in police custody. Explaining Malini’s role, DCP (Crime Branch), Chaitanya Mandlik briefed: “She helped him in two cases (Naroda FIR, 2017, and DCB FIR, March 22). She even visited Srinagar twice with Kiran Patel.
The couple is also charged with “swindling a bungalow owner out of his own house.”
“Patel introduced himself as a property broker. Jagdish Chavda (63) is the brother of BJP leader Jawahar Chavda. The bungalow in Shilaj is estimated to be about Rs 15 crore. The conman met Jagdish and his wife in February 2022 and assured them of a higher price, provided the bungalow could be reworked according to Vaastu. The gullible couple agreed on moving out to facilitate the renovation, for which they paid Rs 35 lakhs,” shared police officials investigating the case.
The couple relocated to their native place in Junagadh. “However, on return they found that Patel had put his nameplate outside the bungalow and even performed a vaastu poojan. When confronted by Chavda, he said that he would buy the bungalow,” the FIR records.
He weaved another story of his money being stuck in some big project with an MNC and promised to pay up once he gets paid. “Patel then moved out without completing the renovation. Later in August 2022, he served a notice on the Chavdas alleging illegal possession of the bungalow. The matter is still pending,” added DCP Mandalik.
