Khyati Hospital Tragedy: Two Patients Die of Cardiac Arrest, Postmortem Reveals

| Updated: November 16, 2024 11:49

Post-mortem reports have revealed that two patients who died after undergoing angioplasty procedures at Khyati Hospital in Bodakdev succumbed to “severe cardiac arrest.” The deceased have been identified as Nagar Senma, 59 and Mahesh Barot, 45, both residents of Borisana village in Mehsana’s Kadi taluka. The procedures were carried out on November 11.

According to the reports, there were no signs of physical injury on either patient, with cardiac arrest listed as the sole cause of death. Viscera samples have been sent for forensic analysis, said a senior police official.

Dr Prashant Vazirani, the cardiologist who performed the procedures, has been arrested. On the day in question, he reportedly carried out seven angioplasties and 19 angiographies single-handedly. Police have lodged three First Information Reports (FIRs) against Dr Vazirani, hospital director Kartik Patel, CEO Chirag Rajput and promoters Dr Sanjay Patolia and Dr Rajshree Kothari, charging them with culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy.

Inspector L.L. Chavda of the Vastrapur police confirmed that searches had been conducted at Dr Vazirani’s home and offices for evidence. Dr Vazirani had been operating under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) scheme, receiving Rs 1,500 per angioplasty and Rs 800 per angiography.

A seven-member special committee that investigated the case noted that none of the patients who underwent procedures on that day had prior heart-related conditions. Based on the committee’s findings, an FIR was registered at Vastrapur police station.

Dr Vazirani claimed during questioning that he had performed hundreds of angioplasties in the past without fatalities, apart from the two recent cases. Given the medical complexity, police have sought assistance from the state government to assign an expert cardiologist to support the investigation.

“We require a cardiologist’s expertise to understand the medical terminology and technicalities involved in these fatalities. A formal request has been made to the state government for assistance,” said a police official.
