Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that several key functionaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Gujarat joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday in the presence of senior AAP leaders Gopal Italia, Manoj Sorathiya, and Ram Dhaduk.
According to AAP, the leaders who switched include Meenaben Chavda, the serving President of Karjan Municipal Corporation; Bharatsinh Atodariya, the Vice President; Vanrajsinh Raolji, the Standing Committee Chairman; Mohammad Sandha, a serving Councillor and former Standing Committee Chairman; Digvijaysinh Atodariya, the Leader of Opposition in the municipal corporation; and Prakashbhai Parmar, the Chairman of the Social Justice Committee.
Additionally, former Karjan Municipal Corporation President Manubhai Vasava, 10 BJP Councillors, and over 2,000 BJP volunteers and office bearers also joined AAP, as per the party.
Kejriwal hailed the defections as a sign of BJP’s weakening hold in Gujarat.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “The fact that such a large number of BJP leaders are joining AAP in Gujarat, which is considered a BJP stronghold, shows that even BJP members have lost hope in their party. They also believe that only AAP can work for the welfare of the people. I welcome all the new members to the AAP family. Together, we will work for the people.”
In another political development, Aakash Sharma, who runs the ‘Apna Purvanchal Parivar’ organisation, and Dimple Sharma, the BJP’s Rajinder Nagar Block President, also joined AAP in Delhi.
