The Karnataka government has withdrawn its directive for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate potential lapses and dereliction of duty by police officers at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru concerning actor Ranya Rao’s gold smuggling case.
The CID probe order was initially issued on Monday night. However, a subsequent order on Wednesday stated that Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta is already conducting an inquiry into the possible involvement of Ranya Rao’s stepfather, K Ramachandra Rao, a Director General of Police (DGP)-rank officer, in the case.
Ramachandra Rao currently serves as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Gupta’s investigation will focus on the circumstances that led to the alleged misuse of protocol-related facilities and the extent of Ramachandra Rao’s involvement in the smuggling case.
Recently, authorities seized gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore from Ranya Rao at Kempegowda International Airport.
The following day, searches at her residence led to the recovery of gold jewellery valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash, according to officials.
