The senior-most judge on the Gujarat High Court, Justice Ashish Jitendra Desai, has been appointed as acting Chief Justice, the union law minister Kiren Rijiju said in tweet, as recently appointed Chief Justice Sonia Gokani will retire on Saturday.
Justice Gokani was appointed as chief justice of Gujarat HC upon the elevation of Justice Aravind Kumar to the Supreme court. Justice Gokani was to hold the office of the chief justice for two weeks.
The law minister wished Justice Desai upon his elevation as an acting chief justice which will come into effect on February 26.
Justice Desai is the second generation to hold an office of the high court’s judgement, as his father Justice Jitendra Desai was the HC judge between 1983 and 1989.
In 1985, Justice Desai became a member of the Bar Council and began practising law at Ahmedabad’s city civil court. He worked in the high court since 1991 and was appointed to the bench in November 2011. Joined the law firm of advocate M.C. Bhatt and advocate Daksha M. Bhatt. Initially practised at the City Civil & Sessions Court in Ahmedabad, and since 1991 at the Gujarat High Court.
Prior to becoming a judge, he worked as an assistant government pleader and additional public prosecutor. In 2006 and 2009, he was also appointed as a central government standing counsel. He served on the Gujarat Electricity Board and the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd panels.
