Harshad Mehta, who assumed the role of Superintendent of Police (SP) for Junagadh district in August 2023, has had his voluntary retirement approved by the Home Department amid widespread discussions about his resignation. During his tenure, Mehta focused extensively on combating illicit liquor, gambling, and drug trafficking.
As a former teacher, he launched the “Say No to Drugs” campaign in Junagadh, which significantly helped youths overcome addiction.
Early Life
Born on May 26, 1974 in Garmli, a small village in Chalala, Amreli district, Mehta is the son of retired teacher Babu Bhai and Narmada Ben. Coming from a family of four brothers, his father served as a principal at a primary school in Paniya Dev.
Mehta began his primary education at Garmli’s primary school and completed grades 10 to 12 at R.K.M. High School in Chalala. He earned a Primary Teacher Certificate (PTC) at Wadia College at the age of 17 and, as he was not eligible for a job until 18, pursued further studies.
Mehta graduated with a BA in English from Prataprai Arts College, Amreli, securing the first rank. Between 1996 and 1998, he completed an MA in English at Saurashtra University, earning a gold medal, followed by a B.Ed. from Aliyabada College.
His teaching career began at a central school in Daman before he joined Kalapi School in Lathi as an English teacher for seven years. In 2001, he attempted the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) exams, clearing the prelims and mains but missing the cut-off by six marks in 2004.
Undeterred, Mehta pursued an M.Ed. part-time at Saurashtra University and transitioned from teaching to lecturing at TN Rao College, Rajkot, where he taught B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses. His persistence paid off when he cleared the GPSC exams in 2007 and secured the 27th rank in 2011, becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP).
Life as Junagadh SP
As SP of Junagadh district, Mehta’s initiatives against drug abuse have included working closely with families and young people to raise awareness. His “Say No to Drugs” campaign has had a significant impact on reducing addiction and protecting the future of the youth in the region.
To honour his contributions, a grand roadshow is scheduled tomorrow at Bahauddin Arts College in Junagadh.
