Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday announced that two more factions of the Jammu and Kashmir-based Hurriyat Conference have renounced separatism and aligned with what he described as the “new Bharat” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
This follows similar decisions made by the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement and the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Political Movement (JKDPM) earlier this week, where they severed ties with separatist ideology.
Shah stated that under the current government, separatism is nearing its end, with a growing wave of unity in Kashmir. “Another great news from Kashmir Valley. Two more groups affiliated with the Hurriyat, namely J&K Tahreeqi Isteqlal and J&K Tahreek-I-Istiqamat, have discarded separatism and reposed their trust in the new Bharat built by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji,” Shah wrote on X.
In a statement, J&K Tahreeqi Isteqlal chairman Gulam Nabi Sofi declared his disassociation from the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and any other separatist groups.
He expressed disappointment with the Hurriyat leadership, saying they failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people. “We continued our struggle despite all odds, but neither APHC (G) nor APHC (M) has been able to meet the expectations of the common masses. They failed at every step to represent the people’s aspirations and sentiments. I have long ago severed my ties with separatist ideology, and today I officially denounce it,” Sofi stated.
Sofi affirmed his allegiance to India and its constitution, clarifying that he had never engaged in activities detrimental to the country’s interests. “I am a true and committed citizen of India. Neither in the past have I been associated with any act against India nor do I or my organisation intend to support any anti-India activities in the future,” he said.
Similarly, J&K Tahreek-I-Istiqamat chairman Ghulam Nabi War also announced his party’s decision to cut ties with the APHC and its separatist stance. He criticised the Hurriyat leadership, stating that they had lost relevance and failed to address the aspirations of the people.
“They failed at every step to represent the people’s aspirations and sentiments. I have long ago severed my ties with separatist ideology and today, I officially sever my connections from it,” War said in his statement.
