An explosion was heard on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from a venue in Wakayama city, according to Japanese official media.
According to Japanese authorities, Kishida was unharmed and safe during the incident. A man, who the police believed to be a suspect, has been apprehended after an object that looked like a pipe was thrown close to the venue of the Japanese prime minister’s outdoor speech.
A man was apprehended after the event, as seen in video footage that was made public. According to media reports, an “explosion-like sound” was heard on the site as Kishida prepared to deliver an outdoor speech at the venue in the Japanese port city.
A media report said that it is “believed that something was thrown in and exploded.”
Shinzo Abe, Kishida’s predecessor, was assassinated at a close range on July 8, 2022, when he was giving a speech at a political rally in the city of Nara.
