Jaishankar Urges India To Abandon Syllabus To Handle US Foreign Policies

| Updated: January 31, 2025 13:18

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar believes India must take the unconventional route in foreign policies to deal with US President Donald Trump.

He emphasised the importance of thinking “out of syllabus,” indicating that traditional diplomatic frameworks might need to be reassessed to align with the evolving global landscape.

Jaishankar, who represented India at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony at the invitation of the US government on January 20 and carried a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Trump, made these remarks during an interactive session at Delhi University’s Hansraj College.

He characterised Trump as an “American nationalist,” and underscored the dynamic shifts that may accompany his administration.

Despite the unpredictability of Trump’s initiatives which could reshape international relations significantly, Jaishankar reassured that India’s diplomatic strategies will steadfastly focus on safeguarding and promoting its national interests.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Trump in their first conversation since the Republican leader assumed office for his second term.

“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
