Jailed Pro-Khalistan Preacher Amritpal Singh Gets 4-Day Parole To Take Oath As MP

| Updated: July 3, 2024 19:00

Amritpal Singh, a jailed pro-Khalistan preacher, has been granted a four-day parole for swearing-in as an MP.

The Waris Punjab De Chief, who was detained in the Dibrugarh jail of Assam under the National Security Act (NSA), emerged victorious in the recently concluded general elections, winning by a margin of about 1.97 lakh votes from the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency.

His family members and officials from several Panthik organisations ran his election campaign.

Earlier in the day, Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa had said that Amritpal was scheduled to take the oath on July 5 at the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chamber. Following his meeting with Speaker Om Birla at his Delhi residence on Wednesday morning, Sarabjit made the announcement.

Sarabjit Singh was victorious as an independent candidate from the Faridkot parliamentary constituency. He is the son of Beant Singh, a former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassin.

Currently, three accomplices of Amritpal Singh, lodged with him at Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the NSA, have also announced that they will run for the upcoming assembly by-elections in Punjab from the Gidderbaha, Barnala, and Baba Bakala assembly constituencies.
