New Delhi: Team India’s hopes for a comeback in the five-match Test series against England suffered a major blow on Monday with key players Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul ruled out of the second Test due to injuries.
The all-rounder Jadeja sustained a hamstring injury during the first Test in Hyderabad, while opener Rahul complained of right quadriceps pain. Both players had made significant contributions in the first Test, with Jadeja scoring 87 and taking five wickets, and Rahul scoring 86. However, England staged a remarkable comeback to win the match by 28 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
To bolster the squad for the second Test starting February 2 in Vizag, the BCCI has included uncapped players Sarfaraz Khan, Sourabh Kumar, and Washington Sundar. This marks a maiden call-up for Sarfaraz, who has impressed with his prolific run-scoring in domestic cricket and the recent India A series against England Lions.
Jadeja’s absence leaves a big void in the team, considering his all-round abilities. Off-spinner Washington Sundar, who has shown promise in his short Test career, is likely to replace him in the playing XI.
Rahul’s injury further adds to India’s woes, especially with captain Virat Kohli already missing the first two Tests due to personal reasons. While Sarfaraz has earned a well-deserved call-up, Rajat Patidar, who was already part of the 15-member squad, has a higher chance of making his debut in Vizag.
India faces an uphill task against England, but the inclusion of fresh talent like Sarfaraz brings hope for a fightback in the series.
