Cricket fans rejoice! The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to return earlier than expected, kicking off on March 22nd, 2024. This comes as exciting news after some uncertainty due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Mark your calendars, the cricket extravaganza begins just 11 days after India wraps up its five-match Test series against England in March. By then, the domestic season will also be done, paving the way for the IPL to unleash its magic.
Despite concerns about the elections clashing with the tournament, the BCCI, led by secretary Jay Shah, has been working tirelessly to secure all 74 matches within India. Shah’s fruitful discussions with government officials and security heads seem to have paid off, ensuring a smooth IPL experience uninterrupted by elections.
To accommodate the elections, league matches and playoffs will be strategically scheduled around voting phases. Additionally, IPL 2024 will wrap up earlier than usual, before the end of May, to avoid conflicting with the ICC T20 World Cup starting in June.
This early finish also aligns with the Indian team’s preparation plans. Captain Rohit Sharma and his men will have ample time to gel and practice before the big tournament, with tours to the West Indies and USA scheduled, along with ICC warm-up matches.
