Officials confirmed on Tuesday that Neel Acharya, an Indian student at Purdue University in the US, had died. He had gone missing on Sunday and his mother had posted a plea for help on social media.

Acharya was pursuing a double major in computer science and data science at the John Martinson Honors College of Purdue University. On Monday, Chris Clifton, the interim head of the computer science department, sent an email to the students and faculty informing them of Acharya’s demise, according to The Exponent.

“I am very saddened to let you know that one of our students, Neel Acharya, is no longer with us,” Clifton was quoted as saying by The Exponent.

He also expressed his condolences to Acharya’s friends, family, and everyone affected by his loss.

Clifton told The Exponent that he got an email from the Office of the Dean of Students confirming Acharya’s death.

“They found a dead person who matched Neel’s description and had Neel’s ID on (him),” he said.

On Monday, Acharya’s mother, Gauri Acharya, had posted on X, seeking help to locate her son who had been missing since January 28 at 12:30 (local time).

“Our son Neel Acharya has been missing since yesterday Jan 28( 12:30 AM EST) He is studying at Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything,” she wrote on X.

She also added, “He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything.” India’s Consulate General in Chicago responded to her post, saying, “(The) Consulate is in contact with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family.
