An Indian national has succumbed to a fatal attack in Canada’s Rockland area near Ottawa. According to the Indian Embassy in Canada, one suspect has been taken into custody. He informed media outlets that they are providing all possible assistance to the victim’s family.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa, due to stabbing. Police has stated a suspect has been taken into custody. We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved kin,” the Indian Embassy in Canada wrote in a post on X.
Canada’s local media reported about the death of one person in Clarence-Rockland. While an arrest has been made, it is not clear whether it’s the same incident the Indian Embassy has referred to in the post.
CBC News reported that the Ontario Provincial Police has warned Rockland residents to expect an increased police presence in the area.
Relations between India and Canada have sunk following the Canadian police’s allegations that Indian diplomats were carrying out “criminal” activities in Canada, including homicide, extortion, intimidation, coercion and harassment.
India and Canada enjoyed relatively close ties until two years ago. The bonhomie came to an end when Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh activist, was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia.
Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Indian diasporas. It has over 1.8 million people of Indian descent. This community has integrated into Canadian society, making significant contributions across fields like academia, politics, business, and technology.
Indians have become a respected and significant immigrant minority in Canada thanks to the richness of Indian culture, language, food, and festivals.
Political and ideological disagreements have, however, occasionally led to conflict within the group despite their significant contributions.
The emergence of pro-Khalistan separatist views among some Canadian parties has led to internal disputes and strained relations with Indian government authorities. Tensions have increased recently, leading to targeted harassment, physical assault, and damage against members of the Indian community and cultural institutions.
