An Indian entrepreneur has shared how his Apple Watch automatically alerted emergency services after his car was involved in a collision on a US highway. Kuldeep Dhankar, founder of cloud services company Last9.io, praised the device for its quick action in dialling 911 following the incident.
Dhankar posted about the event on X (formerly Twitter), along with an image of his severely damaged vehicle and a police officer inspecting the crash scene. He explained that the accident occurred on Interstate 5 (I-5) when his stationary car was rear-ended by another vehicle in traffic.
According to Dhankar, his Apple Watch detected the impact of the crash and immediately contacted 911, enabling emergency responders to arrive at the scene within minutes.
“Got rear-ended by a car while we were at a standstill in traffic on the I-5 yesterday. The car behind was probably a total loss. (We are perfectly safe). Apple Watch detected that we were in a crash and auto-called 911, and there was an officer on the scene within minutes. We were able to leave in 30 minutes and got to our destination safe. So impressed by Apple Watch and California Highway Patrol,” he wrote on X.
The post sparked widespread engagement, with users expressing relief at Dhankar’s safety and appreciation for the Apple Watch’s technology. “Glad you are safe! Apple Watch did its job well,” one user commented. Another wrote, “Take care and drive safe.”
One user applauded the car company, “Glad to know you all are okay. Thank you to the Ford.”
This incident is the latest in a series of reports highlighting the Apple Watch’s life-saving capabilities. In October, the device helped save an elderly woman after it detected a serious heart condition. The watch identified an irregular heartbeat, leading to a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a potentially life-threatening condition if untreated.
