Hindus for Human Rights and Indian American Muslim Council have condemned the appointment of Amit Jani as acting White House liaison to the Department of Homeland Security. Both US-based nonprofit organisations advocate human rights in South Asia and North America.
In Joe Biden’s campaign for Presidential elections, Jani was the National Asian American Pacific Islander Director. He was also the director of the chief information officer action group at the Pentagon, Jersey Globe, according to Politico. However, before he became an ally in Biden’s campaign, the Indian American was a legislative liaison at the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Jani began his career as a youth organiser and a member of the Hudson County Schools of Technology of Board of Education. He has also worked as an account executive at Vision Media Marketing, Phil Swibinski’s political consulting firm.
However, Jani’s appointment is not an isolated case. A few months ago, Sonal Shah, an Indian American economist with ties to Hindu extremist organisations, to the Department of Homeland Security’s Advisory Council. However, the Indian Diaspora Councils signed a petition over her removal that garnered over 12,000 signatures.
According to Syed Ali, President of Indian American Muslim Council, Jani’s appointment sends a worrying message to the Muslim community, especially Indian American Muslims, due to his reported links to Hindu nationalism. The former national AAPI for Joe Biden in USA Presidential elections 2020, Jani, has also been subject to controversy for the alleged support of PM Modi. He also has deep-seated family ties to Hindu nationalist organisations.
