Indian cricketers donned black armbands on the third day of the ongoing Test against England in Rajkot, paying their respects to the late Dattajirao Gaekwad. Gaekwad, a former Indian captain and the country’s oldest living Test cricketer, passed away on February 13th.
The 95-year-old played 11 Tests for India between 1951 and 1962, showcasing his talent not only as a right-handed batsman but also as a medium-pace and leg-break bowler. He even led the Indian team on their 1959 tour of England.
“Team India will be wearing black arm bands in memory of Dattajirao Gaekwad,” the BCCI announced in a statement before the third day’s play. This gesture serves as a poignant reminder of Gaekwad’s contributions to Indian cricket and the lasting impact he left on the sport.
Gaekwad’s passing is a loss not only for his family and friends, but also for the entire cricket fraternity. The black armbands worn by the Indian team are a symbol of respect and a powerful tribute to a legend of the game.
