India is likely to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Ahmedabad, with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitting a Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Future Host Commission on October 1, as per the reports.
This move reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated interest in bringing the Games to India, viewing them as an opportunity for national development. If successful, Gujarat is expected to be the leading candidate for hosting the events.
A sports ministry official highlighted the momentum behind the proposal, noting that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in India in 2036 has gained considerable momentum.”
Last year, during the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, Prime Minister Modi expressed his determination, saying, “We will spare no effort in organising the Olympics on Indian soil in 2036. This has been the long-held dream of 140 crore Indians, and it must be realised with your cooperation.” IOC President Thomas Bach also endorsed India’s aspirations, stating there is a “strong case” for India to host the Games.
India now joins a list of nine other nations that have shown interest in the 2036 Games, including Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara-Monterrey-Tijuana), Indonesia (Nusantara), Turkey (Istanbul), Poland (Warsaw, Krakow), Egypt (New Administrative Capital) and South Korea (Seoul-Incheon). The IOC’s Future Host Commission will oversee a rigorous evaluation process, with a final decision expected in the coming years.
