The Oscars were held late night Sunday (early morning Monday, March, IST) in Los Angeles’ Dolby theatre. It was hosted by popular late night show host Jimmy Kimmel, who had returned for his third stint as the host for the 95th Academy Awards.
The 95th edition surely belonged to Everything Everywhere All at Once, which scored multiple awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, among other categories. That is a whopping five of the 11 coveted categories in 70 mm.
However, India also held its own at the function as RRR’s chartbuster Naatu Naatu won the Best Original Song and The Elephant Whisperer emerged as winner in “Best Documentary Shorts” category. The third nominee from India, Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes, lost to Navalny in the Best Documentary Feature Film segment. Adding icing to distinctly Indian flavour, was Deepika Padukone as presenter. She becomes the third Indian to present an Oscar, Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra being the previous names. The 37-year-old actress turned heads in a Louis Vuitton gown and a Cartier necklace. Deepika completed her look with black opera gloves and a diamond bracelet and rings.
Both RRR’s song Naatu Naatu and the All That Breathes had earlier been pitched as favourites to win the golden statuette. SS Rajamouli directorial RRR has had a good outing this year with winning over the Western audience after gaining steam online since its Netflix appearance globally. Meanwhile, All That Breathes notched top laurels at various international film festivals, including Cannes Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival.
However, this is not the first time that India shines at the Oscars. It started in 1982 with Bhanu Athaiya bagging the award for the Best Costume Design. The list goes on…
