External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has stated that while many countries are nervous following Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections, India is not among them.
Speaking at the Aditya Birla 25th Silver Jubilee Scholarship Programme in Mumbai, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had established strong relations with several US presidents.
“When he first visited Washington DC, Barack Obama was the President, then it was Donald Trump, and then it was Joe Biden. There is something natural in terms of how he (PM Modi) forges those relationships. I know many countries are nervous about the US today, but let’s be honest. We are not one of them,” he said.
He said that Prime Minister Modi was one of the first three world leaders to congratulate the US president-elect when it was announced that he defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the crucial election.
On November 5, PM Modi congratulated Trump over the phone following his win in the US presidential election.
Trump lauded PM Modi throughout the conversation, saying that the world adored him and that he was a great man, according to sources.
The US president-elect went on to say that India is a great country and that he views PM Modi and India as genuine friends. He also mentioned that both leaders decided to work together for global peace.
PM Modi claimed to have had a “great conversation” with Trump by calling him his “friend” in a tweet. He expressed his delight about working with Trump once more to strengthen India-US relations in a number of areas, such as technology and defence.
