In a series win knock, India beat West Indies by 8 runs in the second T20I of three-match series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. The visitors won the toss and chose to bowl and the Indian side marked a 187-runs target on the scoreboard.
Coming to the crease, the Indian opening batsmen were sent back early in the innings – Rohit Sharma was caught by Brandon King on Roston Chase’s ball at 19 and Ishan Kishan was caught by Kyle Mayers at 2 on the balls of Sheldon Cottrell. However, Virat Kohli’s 52 runs knock off 41 balls and Rishabh Pant’s 52 runs off 28 balls followed by Venkatesh Iyer, who contributed 33 runs of 88 runs – that Indian side scored in last seven overs.
Meanwhile, Roston Chase took a three-wicket haul, while Sheldon Cottrell and Romario Shepard bagged a wicket each.
Chasing the target, the visitors lost early wickets. Opening batsmen – Brandon King (22) and Kyle Mayers (9) were dismissed by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Ravi Bishnoi respectively. However, West Indies went on to score 178 runs at the end of 20 overs with the help of unbeaten 68 runs by Rovman Powell and 62 runs by Nicholas Pooran, who contributed 100 runs partnership for the third wicket. But in vain, as the team fell short of the target by 8 runs, giving away the Indian side to win and lead the three-match T20I series by 2-0.
Rishabh Pant was named the player of the match. The third match between India and West Indies will take place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on February 20.
