After a thrilling first Test match in Christchurch on Monday ended with New Zealand defeating Sri Lanka by two wickets off the last ball, India automatically qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Kane Williamson led the Kiwis to victory with outstanding 121-run innings as the hosts beat a challenging 285-run mark late in the fifth day to end Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the WTC final.
The only way Sri Lanka could have advanced to the championship game was to sweep New Zealand 2-0, but their dreams were dashed when they lost the opening game.
The WTC final, which will be held at The Oval in London from June 7 to 11, will feature India vs. Australia.
India lost to New Zealand in the final at Southampton in 2021 by an eight-wicket margin and thus came in second place that year.
