The All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, announced on Sunday that Latha Mallikarjun, who won as an independent candidate from the Harapanahalli Assembly segment, has extended her unconditional support to the Congress party in the state.
Latha Mallikarjun, daughter of late M P Prakash, a veteran leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, defeated BJP’s G Karunakara Reddy in the elections by a margin of 13,845 votes.
Surjewala expressed his gratitude towards Latha Mallikarjun, her husband Mallikarjun, and all their supporters and well-wishers for extending their support to the Congress party. He added that Latha Mallikarjun decided to support the Congress party in Karnataka due to her ideological roots and commitment to Congress ideals.
M P Prakash, a veteran socialist and Janata Parivar leader, had joined Congress in his last days, and his son, M P Ravindra, continued his legacy until his demise in 2018.
In the May 10 elections, the Congress party emerged victorious with 135 seats out of 224 in the assembly, while the ruling BJP secured 66 seats, and the Janata Dal (Secular) led by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda won 19 seats. With Latha Mallikarjun’s support, the Congress party hopes to continue serving the people of Karnataka.
