Ravindra Jadeja could have easily gone on to make a double-century against Sri Lanka on Saturday, but the Indian all-rounder sent a message asking to declare. Jadeja said he wanted his side to exploit the variable bounce and turn on offer.
Skipper Rohit Sharma has already faced a lot of flak for declaring the innings when Jadeja was close to getting his first double-century in international cricket. It could also have been the call of head coach Rahul Dravid-‘The Wall’ had declared the innings when Sachin Tendulkar was batting at 194* against the New Zealand in Multan Test, 2004.
Jadeja was close to hitting his first-ever double tonne before the decision to declare innings came from the Indian dressing room. The decision upset fans, who thought Jadeja deserved the time to reach the milestone.
However, the ‘Rockstar’ explained at the press conference that it was entirely his decision to not proceed with the innings. “Rohit Sharma had sent a message through Kuldeep to go for 200, and declare after that. But I opposed his suggestion; my logic was if we made tired Sri Lankan batsman play before tea, we had a better chance of gettting early wickets,” Jadeja said.
