Girishbhai Trivedi, veteran journalist and chairman of Virago Media Pvt. Ltd., passed away in Ahmedabad on Sunday. He was 84. Trivedi breathed his last at a private hospital. He is survived by three daughters — Deepal Trivedi, Editor of Vibes of India; Nehal Shah and Rajal.
Born on 24 June 1940, his journey in journalism began at the tender age of 17 with Phulchhab Daily in Rajkot, where he worked as a Reporter-cum-Sub-Editor. Over the decades, he rose to become an unparalleled personality in media, holding pivotal roles such as Resident Editor of Mumbai Samachar and Editor-in-Chief of Loksatta and Jansatta. His extraordinary efforts included founding Gujarat’s first pictorial news magazine, Chitra Ranjan and serving as Group Editor of Sambhaav Media Limited.
He was not just a journalist; he was a custodian of free, fair and fearless reporting. Trained under luminaries like the late Bhupat Vadodaria, he carried forward the ethos of ethical journalism, earning the respect of stalwarts like Ramnath Goenka and Girilal Jain. Despite witnessing the decline of media ethics, he remained steadfast in his belief in journalism’s power to serve the greater good.
A man of profound discipline and positivity, his resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic exemplified his remarkable spirit. Choosing self-isolation in his Ahmedabad residence for 463 days, he embraced life with mindfulness, turning solitude into an opportunity for introspection and growth. From his meticulous daily routine to his engaging virtual interactions with family and friends across continents, he taught us the art of finding joy within.
At 81, he poured his energy into his dream project, Vibes of India, a platform he founded to promote the values he held dear. As its Chairman, he spearheaded the initiative with youthful zeal, ensuring its ethos aligned with his lifelong dedication to journalistic integrity.
Beyond his professional accolades, he was a family man and a lover of life’s simple pleasures. He cherished his time watering plants, feeding peacocks, enjoying thoughtful meals and staying connected with loved ones.
His love for storytelling extended to his newfound interest in OTT shows like The Family Man, where his admiration for actor Manoj Bajpayee mirrored his deep appreciation for authenticity in every form.
Girish Trivedi’s life was an epicentre of inspiration, reminding us to cherish every day, strive for excellence and lead with kindness and courage. Apart from his three daughters, he is also survived by his loving and proud family, friends and a vast network of admirers who will forever remember him as a focal point of integrity, wisdom and kindness.
