IIMA Student Dies By Suicide In Hostel

| Updated: September 27, 2024 14:19

A second-year PGP student from the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) was found dead in his hostel room at the B-school’s new campus in Vastrapur area on Thursday.

Akshith Bhukya, 24, a native of Warangal, Telangana, was found hanging in his hostel room around 10.45 a.m., according to Vastrapur police. Police officials suspect that stress may have been a likely factor in the suicide, although the incident is still under investigation.

The Red Brick Summit (TRBS), a top management conclave, was cancelled by the IIM-A administration following his death. Bhukya was the primary coordinator for the notable three-day event, slated to begin on September 27.

Giving the specifics, Zone-1 DCP Himanshu Kumar Verma said, “Prima facie, we do not suspect any foul play in the incident. The investigation so far indicates that Bhukya was possibly under stress due to the TRBS that was scheduled to begin on Friday. This is just the preliminary detail, and we are further investigating if he suffered from depression or if there was any other issue at play.”

According to Verma, the incident has been notified to Bhukya’s parents. On Thursday night, they were expected to arrive in Ahmedabad.

The in-charge inspector of Vastrapur police, V D Mori, stated that Bhukya was in charge of organising the Red Brick Summit and that he had last spoken to a friend on Thursday morning.

“After talking to his friend, he went to his room around 10:30 am. When calls made by his friends went unanswered, they came to check on him and knocked on the door of his room. When they received no response, they entered his room through the window and found him hanging by a rope,” Mori said.

“His friends told us that he was the lead coordinator for the summit and was under stress. We have registered a case of accidental death. The body has been sent to Sola Civil Hospital for postmortem,” Mori continued. However, investigation is underway to determine the origins of stress.

According to Bhukya’s LinkedIn account, he received his BTech in computer science from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal. He spent more than a year working in Hyderabad as a software developer prior to enrolling at the IIM-A in 2023.

He worked as an intern at S&P Global in Hyderabad earlier this year. He was a student in the second year of IIM-A’s premier MBA program, the Post Graduate Programme (PGP). Next year, Bhukya was set to graduate.
