As anticipated, 1986 batch IAS officer Pankaj Kumar has been appointed as the new chief secretary of Gujarat. He takes over from Anil Mukim, who served as Gujarat Chief Secretary from 2019. Mukim retired in August 2020 and was given two extensions, each of six months.
Pankaj Kumar started his career from Mahuva in Bhavnagar district as Assistant Collector and it is a coincidence that the outgoing Chief Secretary also began his career as the Collector of Bhavnagar.
Pankaj Kumar, the new chief secretary, hails from Bihar and was Additional Chief Secretary (Home).
Pankaj Kumar is the seniormost IAS officer of Gujarat cadre. He did his civil engineering from IIT Kanpur and did his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with specialisation in public policy and management.
