In his first campaign rally after surviving an assassination attempt, former US President Donald Trump turned down criticism that he poses a threat to democracy, telling a sizable audience in Michigan that he “took a bullet for democracy.”
Trump’s running mate, J. D. Vance, also attended the Michigan event on Saturday. Trump is the Republican nominee for president in the elections set for November 5.
To witness him and his running mate, over 12,000 people came to the Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena.
“They keep saying he’s a threat to democracy. I’m saying, “What the hell did I do to democracy?’ Last week I took a bullet for democracy,” Trump said.
“What did I do against democracy? Crazy,” Trump, 78, said amidst applause from thousands of his supporters.
Trump made these remarks a week after the former president survived a murderous plot while on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania. Just a few minutes into his address, he was shot in the ear and had to be driven off stage. During the incident, two people suffered injuries and one attendee and the gunman died.
The former president also discussed Project 2025, which his opponents and the Democratic Party in opposition say poses a threat to democracy.
“I don’t want to know anything about it. But what they do is misinformation and disinformation,” he said.
The extensive project, which is being overseen by the conservative Heritage Foundation, contains a comprehensive plan outlining how the incoming Republican president would implement an unprecedented reform of the executive branch.
