How Police Unravelled Debt-Ridden Hotelier’s Fake Death

| Updated: January 1, 2025 15:59

They say movies mirror life with some amount of exaggeration. Movies are also a great source of ideas, especially the scheming ones. Fake death for a purpose is a common theme in Hindi movies such as Don, Kahaani, Phir Aayi Haseen Dilruba and Drishyam (the sequel) to name a few.

In a similar real-life incident in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, a hotelier mired in debt, staged his death.

According to a report, Dalpat Singh Parmar (40) faked his death in a car accident to claim a life insurance payout of Rs 1.26 crore. His game was up when the police unravelled the truth with the help of CCTV footage.

The police discovered a charred body in a car in Vadgam village on Friday. The vehicle registration showed Parmar as the owner. However, forensic analysis revealed a mismatch between the body and Parmar’s family DNA samples.

As the police delved deeper into the case, it emerged that Parmar accumulated debts to build a hotel. He devised a plan to fake his death in a car accident, hoping his family would collect Rs 1 crore accident cover and an additional Rs 23 lakh insurance payout.

With the support of the members of his family and accomplices, including his brother, Parmar had his team exhume a corpse from a nearby cremation ground, place it in Parmar’s car, and set it ablaze to stage the accident.

The police, under the watch of Banaskantha police superintendent Akshayraj Makwana, accessed CCTV footage from the cremation ground which revealed four individuals moving the body. After interrogating them, the suspects admitted to stealing the corpse of Ramesh Solanki, who died four months earlier.

Reports indicate that Parmar is still on the run.
