The death of a popular doctor in Veraval of Gir-Somnath district has created a controversy after a purported suicide note recovered from the incident spot. The Gir-Somnath police is investigating the matter and has sent the note to FSL for analysing the handwriting.
Dr Atul Chag owned a multi-storey MDA hospital at Veraval’s Tower Chowk on S.T. Bus Stand Road. According to Veraval police inspector S.M. Ishrani: “About 11.30 am on Sunday, a staffer from Dr Chag’s hospital called the local police. When Dr Chag was not seen at his usual time at 10 am in the hospital, the staffer went to his fourth-floor residence looking for him. He was shocked to find him hanging from the ceiling fan in the bedroom.”
The 62-year-old doctor, who lived alone, had his hospital on the first three storeys and residence on the fourth floor. Police suspect the death took place in the early morning hours. The news of Dr Chag’s alleged suicide has created shock waves in the district. He was a popular paediatrician treated hundreds of patients. The turnout at his funeral was aa large one.
While the police is still investigating, the suicide note is reportedly a one-liner: “I am committing suicide because of Naranbhai and Rajeshbhai Chudasama.”
Rajesh Chudasama is the current MP from Gir-Somnath district. Dr Chag always wrote his prescription in English. However, the suicide note in Gujarati and signed in English has confounded the police. The note has been sent to FSL to confirm if it was Dr Chag’s writing.
Preliminary findings reveal that Chag had lent Rs 2.5 crore to one Naranbhai Chudasama of Chorwad, who allegedly refused to return the money despite repeated requests.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani took to Twitter to request the state government to investigate the circumstances that led Dr Chag to tragically end his life. He has also specially requested the Home Minister to investigate the matter.
PI Ishrani said that they are investigating who is Naranbhai mentioned in the suicide note, as the note mentions only the first name. Incidentally, Rajesh Chudasama’s father is also named Naranbhai.
