Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Ahmedabad on Sunday to pay respect to Elaben Bhatt, a social worker and the creator of SEWA who passed away in November of last year.
The former first lady will visit Gujarat for two days on February 5 and 6. During that time, she will also visit Surendranagar to meet salt pan workers. On February 5, Clinton is scheduled to stop by Bhatt’s home and the SEWA headquarters.
After 1995 and 2018, this will be her third visit to SEWA. Confirming the schedule, SEWA’s Rashim Bedi who is coordinating Clinton’s visit, said, “On February 5 afternoon, Hillary Clinton will first pay tributes to Elaben Bhatt with whom she was in touch since her first visit to her house in the 1990s. Later in the evening, she will visit the SEWA Reception Centre near Victoria Garden in Ahmedabad.”
Clinton will subsequently unveil a plaque to remember Bhatt’s initial encounter with women street vendors on April 12, 1972, in Victoria Garden, which is across the street from the SEWA Reception Center. This encounter served as the impetus for SEWA, which is now a global movement. To commemorate SEWA’s 50th anniversary, Bhatt planted a banyan tree in this garden in April 2022.
