Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is a passion project for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has always been fascinated by the culture and history of the courtesans. In a statement, he said “Heeramandi is an important milestone in my journey as a filmmaker. This is an epic, first of its kind series based on the courtesans of Lahore. It is an ambitious, grand and all-encompassing series; therefore I am nervous yet excited about making it. I am looking forward to my partnership with Netflix and bringing Heeramandi to audiences all over the world.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his grand and spectacular films that have won him many awards and accolades. Some of his notable works include Khamoshi: The Musical, Black, Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Guzaarish. His most recent film was the 2022 blockbuster Gangubai Kathiawadi, which starred Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in the lead roles.
