Heavy Rain Causes Chaos at IGI Airport: Terminal-1 Canopy Collapse and Flight Disruptions

The national capital experienced heavy rainfall today, resulting in a tragic incident at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The canopy of Terminal 1 collapsed, leading to one fatality and eight injuries. The adverse weather conditions have significantly impacted air travel, affecting flights between New Delhi and Ahmedabad.

Here are the key details:

  1. Delayed Arrival from Delhi to Ahmedabad:
    • The IndiGo flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad, originally scheduled to arrive at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport at 7:35 am, faced a delay of two and a half hours. It eventually landed at SVPI at 10:11 am, leaving approximately 180 passengers stranded at Delhi airport.
  2. Cancelled Departure from IGI Airport to Ahmedabad:
    • Another IndiGo flight, set to depart from IGI Airport to Ahmedabad at 9:10 am, was cancelled, causing frustration among passengers.
  3. Delayed Flights:
    • Air India’s flight, expected to arrive at SVPI at 1 pm, will also experience delays.
    • IndiGo’s flight landing in Ahmedabad at 1:25 pm will face a delay of over half an hour.
  4. Cancellation from Ahmedabad to Delhi:
    • IndiGo cancelled its 11:20 am flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi.
  5. Overall Impact:
    • A total of 28 flights have been cancelled in Delhi due to heavy rains and gusty winds.
