Forget Covid, forget 2021, the New Year is poised to kick off on a musical note as the most-awaited ‘Saptak’, billed as the biggest classical music festival, starts on the first day.
And this is coming after a long hiatus of two years. Amdavadis will finally be able to vibe live with the tunes of classical ragas. This is Saptak’s 42nd annual edition.
There is no need to worry, this edition promises to be Covid-appropriate. The festival will be a hybrid one, when the musical sessions will be held offline as well as web-casted online, simultaneously.
This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of Sangeet Martand Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj and Padma Bhushan Pandit Rajan Mishra. The first day’s sessions each will be devoted as a tribute to Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ali Akbar Khan to celebrate their centenary.
‘Saptak’ was launched in 1980 by renowned tabla player, the late Nandan Mehta and his wife Manju Mehta, along with many renowned classical musicians. The festival features both emerging talents and established performers. Besides pure classical music, it also includes performances of folk music, classical and semi-classical dance forms.
This year 125-odd artists from various locations are going to travel to Ahmedabad to perform at the 13-day festival, braving the pandemic and quite a few of them are senior citizens. According to sources, the entire festival will be a tribute to the great musicians we lost in recent times. This platform is being given to various musicians with a family legacy in music as well.
The viewers who want to experience Saptak through online streaming can watch it on shaale.com. Each session will be available to watch for 48 hours from the time of performance. Although some changes may occur at the last minute due to the ongoing pandemic.
