Gujarat’s Covid Death Conundrum: Now, The Numbers Don’t Match in Anand

| Updated: December 12, 2021 16:07

Over twenty thousand COVID-19 cases, with 96 deaths due to the virus, were reported in Anand Kheda district over the last two years. The exact number of cases stands at 20,103.

However, in the months of April-May 2021 alone, over 700 bodies were cremated in cemeteries in the district following COVID-19 guidelines.

The official COVID death toll in the district has been recorded as 50, till Saturday, December 11, 2021, in the government books. On the other hand, the state has paid up in 269 cases of COVID death aid – while hundreds of cases are still under consideration.

The discrepancies remain glaring even as forms were filled out by the Congress four months ago. In the process, about four months back, 3,700 forms were filled from Charotar, while 1,738 forms were distributed in Charotar as the state began distributing forms to aid the families of Covid deceased. Over 1,000 forms were submitted in Bharai. An aid total of Rs 2.51 crore was paid to 501 families.

The death toll remains unclear. Adding to the confusion is the reluctance of some families to fill out aid forms.
