Five members of a Gujarati family allegedly met with five different accidents on the same day for insurance claims. However, the probe discovered that the truth behind the coincidental tragedy was to make a fortune.
A 40-year-old Rajkot man and his four relatives reported that they met with mishaps at distinct places on December 31, 2021. Later, the family filed insurance claims with different companies. However, two of them suspected a ruse in the accidents.
They gave applications to police in Rajkot, Amreli, and Ahmedabad to investigate doubting a potential defraud.
According to the Gujarat Police and insurance companies, Tarun Kantaria, his brother-in-law GD Rathod, his cousin Gagan Kantaria, and his wife Bhoomi purchased various vehicles in November 2021. Then, they took insurance covers for premium sedans and SUVs. In total, they paid an annual premium of ₹68,000 with a total payout claim of ₹80 lakhs.
In January 2022, they again purchased five vehicles, insured them, and sought ₹40 lakhs for accidental damage. However, the private insurance company denied the claim due to the lack of original purchase documents. But, the family lodged a police complaint and received the amount.
However, the insurance company filed a plea with the police. Afterward, the cops discovered that an earthmover purposely damaged the vehicles. The police witnessed similar cases in Saurashtra and Surat.
