Western Zonal Council of the Government of India postponed the proposal to merge four South Gujarat villages with Dadra and a part of Ghoghala village, Saurashtra, with Diu.
Earlier, the Union Home Ministry decided to add four villages in the Valsad district, Meghval, Nagar, Raymal, and Madhuban, into Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The MHA also suggested adding a part of Ghoghala village to Diu.
However, the Western Zonal Council has deferred the final discretion.
Geographically, the four Valsad villages connect to Dadra. According to the officials, the Meghval surrounds the UT. On the other hand, the three villages are between the Madhuvan dam reservoir and the UT.
Reportedly, the Gujarat government consented to pass the governance of Meghval village. However, they are skeptical about the other three. In the meeting, the Gujarat government also extended a request to preserve their rights over the Madhubani dam.
The Western Council also raised the Ghogala issue on the Saurashtra coast. In 1989, Diu gave a plot of land to Gujarat to develop a fish port. In exchange, Gujarat was supposed to provide a piece of land to Diu. However, the case has been pending for 30 years.
According to some sources, the immediate reason behind the suspension of the decision is the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections.
