Ahmedabad’s Gujarat Vidyapith management has scrapped eight positions from its governing body, reducing the number of members from 23 to just 15.
These positions were held by teachers’ representatives on an annual rotation basis. The decision was taken during the governing body’s meeting in June 2023 and the teachers’ representatives whose terms are ending on March 31 were informed about the decision on Friday.
Sources said the governing body of the deemed university used to have 15 members earlier.
However, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) rules it was mandatory to appoint teachers’ representatives to the body and therefore eight additional positions were added during the 1996-99 tenure of Ramlal Parikh as the vice chancellor of the university.
Department heads, professors and assistant professors were appointed to these positions as representatives of teachers. However, after the new rules of UGC made board of governors mandatory for deemed universities, the Vidyapith management was restructured and the eight positions scrapped.
“The new governing body already has teachers’ representation. So there is no need for more teachers’ representatives as its members,” Harshad Patel, vice-chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith said.
