A farmer from Gondal earned a record- breaking rate of Rs 11,000 for a 20 kilogram bag of ‘Jeera’ (cumin seeds) on Wednesday in the Unjha spice market in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. The video of this sale which enabled Asia’s largest spice market register its highest bid, has gone viral.
The Unjha APMC (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) is pleasantly surprised as the regular rate for the same quantity of ‘ Jeera’ is Rs 3,250.
As this Unjha APMC (Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) has won the trust of farmers, the market generates close to Rs 2,000 crore of export annually.
Unjha APMC Chairman, Mr Dinesh Patel told media persons, “As the Jeera season will last another 20-25 days, the highest ever price quoted for Jeera has brought joy to the jeera farmers. In the current situation, production of spices is the lowest and this indicates that prices will be higher than usual. Two months ago, a 20 kg bag of jeera fetched Rs 2,500. He clarified that this rate is given for a small quantity of jeera but the regular rate of jeera is around Rs 3250.
