First-year Masters in Developmental Communication (MDC) students at Gujarat University have made waves with their bold new theatrical production, ‘The Byuttiful Performance’.
The play, which was directed by Maulikraj Shrimali and Amit Thakkar, was the culmination of a two-week workshop that explored and challenged traditional concepts of beauty.
Body shaming and colourism are widespread concerns that have a psychological toll. The 12-member group explored these subjects through research, mimicry exercises and dialogue delivery.
The show, which was based on actual events, offered an effective indictment of the unrealistic standards of beauty that are placed on people.
In addition, an interactive session during the performance allowed audience members to share their personal stories and generated candid discussions on the negative effects of pressures associated with body image.
Dr Jyoti Pareek, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Chairperson of the Women’s Development Cell at Gujarat University, attended the show and praised the students for using theatre as a medium to challenge and redefine conventional beauty standards.
